Hello,

Thanks Nicola for the update on the workshop, its a shame it didnt happen but its good to see there is interest for the future.

For those of you who are interested SuSanA hosted a workshop in June in Lusaka that looked at the capacity gaps for sanitation actors in the city and how the platform can help to address them.

forum.susana.org/10-announcements-regard...sdg6-in-lusaka#21984

Currently there is some work being done to develop some webinars and thematic discussions to address the three main capacity gaps:
1. Enforcement of standards and regulations for household sanitation
2. Community engagement and the involvement of communities in the planning process of projects
3. Behaviour change strategies and the need for sensitisation of communities to good OSS practices and FSM

I will continue to update the forum as they develop but currently there is a slight lull for the summer. All being well you will hear more form me about it in September.

Hi All

Unfortunately that top meaaage is a year and a half old and there was no workshop held due to lack of response (plus more) at that time!

I believe WaterAid held some form of 'SAAB launch event' maybe 6 months ago but I afraid I have no details or even contacts of those who may have attended.

I am very interested to find out if this workshop happened and what was the findings and way forward. I am currently involved in a Sanitation project in Kenya and I have a few ideas that I would like to discuss with interested parties.

Re: Sanitation As A Business Workshop focused on SSA - is this of interest? (UNICEF Zambia are considering hosting a workshop)

Hi, I am new to the group and I hope I'm not late as concerns this workshop. I am a social entrepreneur with a three years dedication to working on various innovative business models that can serve consumers in various communities right down to those at the base of the pyramid; creating a huge social impact/upgrading lives while still making profits and as well not making the value of certain high end prestigious products loose their value or attraction from the rich. I will like to be a part of this workshop even if it means sharing by email for others to learn...
Every business has to take a new trend- Not only looking at making profits but social impacting their consumers. Consumers are the reason every business succeeds. If a business choose to exploit its consumer, the world keeps drifting to that point of the rich getting rich while the poor keep getting worst. Charities are not the best way to bring social change.Givers might someday turn beggars.Every giver needs to give by teaching how to get. Social impact business is the way to go; reach more consumers with your affordable method= automatic profits and social change. I can explain my vision...

Hi Bruce

Thanks for the response - I will add you to the mailing list.

Lots to discuss there -I won't throw this forum off course by asking lots more about your work but sounds interesting - hopefully you are making full use of the forum to gain info from others based in such business models.

Thank you,

Nicola

Re: Sanitation As A Business Workshop focused on SSA - is this of interest?

I am very interested in this workshop. We are developing a for-profit sanitation project in rural Rwanda. This is currently small scale. A local cooperative has conducted a successful test of locally manufactured portable UDDTs in 17 homes. Materials to build the next 100 toilets have been purchased and are on the way to the village for local fabrication. There are several potential revenue streams including purchase/lease, servicing the toilets, fertilizer and fuel. We are learning and would like to learn more.

Sanitation As A Business Workshop focused on SSA - is this of interest? (UNICEF Zambia are considering hosting a workshop)

Hi All,

UNICEF Zambia are considering hosting a workshop with the following objective:
"To share experience on successful business models for sanitation marketing in rural and peri-urban Africa".

Concept as follows:
"Although there has been notable sanitation marketing successes for many parts of Asia (and to some extent for peri-urban Africa) there has been little evidence of this in rural sub-Saharan Africa. Most sanitation marketing projects have focused more on developing toilet options that look nice in reports but are not usually available or affordable for rural populations. Too much Supply driven rather than Demand responsive approaches.

Less attention has been placed on establishing viable business model for delivering sanitation service through private sector. Much of rural Africa present challenges to successful business models including:
1. Affordability: Many rural communities do not have a strong ‘cash’ economy rely more on self-reliance and collective support. So even where sanitation coverage has made good progress over the last decade most householder build toilet themselves using locally available materials.
2.Weak private sector capacity: Given the weak above it follow that private sector capacity is largely limited to specific service (e.g. mobile phones, fast moving consumables, second hand clothes etc). Sanitation services limited to pit diggers and local masons who may build sub-structure or all the toilet.
3.Product Placement: Most rural market centres generally rely on fast moving products. Bulky, slow moving products pose problems in terms of storage, and wear and tear. To make matters worse, transport costs tend to be relatively high in rural Africa and hence cost for transporting bulky products is often prohibited, the more rural / remote the higher these costs.

The workshop is therefore envisaged to bring together field experience viable business models on sanitation marketing from different parts of Sub-Saharan Africa".

Can I ask the group (a) if you feel this is a useful initiative and if you would attend in mid June (if not - would be interested to know why too - is there enough learning in this area in your opinion?); (b) if you were to attend would you be interested in sharing some learning or prefer to learn from others.

Quick responses appreciated so we can gauge interest and get things moving if relevant.

Many thanks,

Nicola
