Dear Roshan,

As I wrote in a comment to Mr. Arbogast's blog post, the second myth "sewerage is unaffordable" may not be a myth after all. In 2008 Hall and Lobina calculated that urban sewerage in developing countries is affordable through a combination of national financial resources and a redistribution of WASH aid. (www.washdoc.info/docsearch/title/165221)

As far as I can see Hall and Lobina did not include the potential costs of dealing with issues such as the availability of land, space constraints in slums and water availability. Therefore a recalculation based on the latest data and insights would be useful. Has the Gates Founbdation carried out their own cost-benefit analyis of centralised vs decentralised sanitation options?
