SuSanA Working Group 10: Take part in edit-a-thon on 19-20 March (and before) to improve Wikipedia for Operation, Maintenance and Sustainable Services

Dear Members of SuSanA Working Group 10 (Operation, Maintenance and Sustainable Services)!

Your expertise is needed!

SuSanA has announced an Edit-a-thon to commemorate World Water Day and to improve WASH-related Wikipedia articles. Educating the public is critical to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal Number 6 (SDG6): "Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all".

Therefore, this event is taking place:

What: World Water Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
When: 19-20 March 2017
Where: Wherever you and your computer are.
Who: You can contribute solo, or work with a group of friends.
Why you? You are committed to achieving SDG6.
Why now? Achieving water and sanitation for all requires educating and informing all stakeholders. Wikipedia is the 5th most often visited website in the world.

Next steps for you:
  1. Register your interest by replying in this thread and posting “Yes, I’m interested because...” to this thread.
  2. Look at the list of suggested articles to work on below, and provide your feedback or comments. Which article would you like to work on?
  3. Have a look at what the other working groups will work on here: forum.susana.org/component/kunena/213-wo...clock-together#20524
  4. Learn to edit Wikipedia articles by giving it a go (this page can get you started: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation ) and by viewing short videos which we will post here next week: forum.susana.org/component/kunena/213-wo...d-the-clock-together
What if I can’t make it on 19-20 March?
No problem. You can edit Wikipedia anytime. Please let us know what you’re working on. This effort is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant to SuSanA . The project team wants to know how many SuSanA members contribute to the Edit-a-Thon.

What if I don’t have a reliable internet connection?
As an editor you can help in so many ways. Write new content. Improve existing content. Correct errors. Add images. Add references with links.

What if I have more questions?
Just ask. We want to make it easy for you.

Let’s pull together for SDG6! Please join this Edit-a-thon.

Kind regards,

Ajay Paul and Stefan Reuter
Leads for SuSanA Working Group 10

+++++++++++

Wikipedia articles that WG 10 members could work on:

- Adding content to existing articles touching on O&M and services: - Adding O&M content to existing articles about particular technologies: Possible new articles:
  • Sanitation as a business - or add content about this to existing article on sanitation
... What else?

Again we could also think about languages other than English, like we had discussed here for Working Group 11: forum.susana.org/component/kunena/64-wg-...or-groundwater#20556

Re: SuSanA Working Group 10: Take part in edit-a-thon on 19-20 March (and before) to improve Wikipedia for Operation, Maintenance and Sustainable Services

Thanks Ajay and Stefan!

SuSanA's Wikipedia World Water Day Editathon (19th/20th March) is being organised under the Gates Foundation Phase 3 Grant.

As one of the partners in this grant, Oxfam will be supporting the WG10 to get involved in the Edit-a-thon.

I will start by proposing some Wikipedia pages which WG10 members may be interested in editing.

Here are some suggestions:

Septic tanks en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septic_tank
Stabilisation pond en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stabilization_pond
Vacuum truck en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_truck
Appropriate technology en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appropriate_technology
Grease trap en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grease_trap
Sustainable sanitation en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_sanitation
Willingness to pay en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willingness_to_pay
Public toilet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_toilet
Project stakeholder en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_stakeholder
Sanitation as a business (new article to be created)

What does the group think about focusing on these pages? Have you got ideas of more useful/relevant ones? Please enter your views here in this thread

The Edit-a-thon runs from 19th-20th March, and you can get involved from wherever you are in the world, for whatever amount of time you can spare! Soon, I'll be sharing some short videos which explain how you can make basic edits on Wikipedia pages take a look here for more details, here is Ruth explaining some of the basics
.

Looking forward to hearing the thoughts/questions and comments from WG10!

Re: SuSanA Working Group 10: Take part in edit-a-thon on 19-20 March (and before) to improve Wikipedia for Operation, Maintenance and Sustainable Services

Dear Wasif,

Great, thank you!

Have you already taken up a Wikipedia account and registered on the Outreach Dashboard to make your edits count for this edit-a-thon? I don't recognise you here in the list of editors but perhaps your user name is not related to your name (which is fine):
outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Su..._March_2017/students

If you haven't yet registered for the event, just click on this registration link:
outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Su...2017?enroll=xjwmpagf

We currently have 30 people signed up which is great!

You could also consider doing translations into another language (is Urdu your lanuage)?
There are translator tools available in Wikipedia to help you.
See here for more information:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/S...into_other_languages

I look forward to meeting you in the Virtual Workroom some time during the 48 hour period starting this Sunday at 1 pm CET! (so early evening on Sunday until early evening on Tuesday for you)

This is the link to the room:
seint.adobeconnect.com/wpeditathon/

You don't need a password, just enter your name and click "enter as guest".

Regards,
Elisabeth
