Use the "Select Language" button at the top (Google Translate) - by: muench
There is also a button to go back to the original (English) version afterwards.

If the "Select Language" button is not relevant for you, you can hide it by going to "Basics" at the top right and clicking on "Deactivate translation".

How about giving it a try? The good news is that that Google Translate tool is bound to get better and better as the years go by. Perhaps 5 years from now the translations will be near perfect?! So far, they are still inaccurate, particularly for the lesser known languages, but in general it can give you a pretty good grasp of the content of the page.

* If the language of your choice is not listed in the Google Translate tool, then we are sorry but there is nothing we can do about it. You would have to contact Google.]]>

A list of commonly used abbreviations on the forum - by: muench

Then one more click takes you to our brilliant new abbreviations list on Wikipedia:

Every time I see an important abbreviation pop up, I add it to that list. And you can do the same (Mughal has set the example!). Just click on the edit button at the top of the list and add it. The list also functions like a glossary because I have hyperlinked all the terms to relevant Wikipedia articles.

Here you can see where to find the edit button on the Wikipedia page:

I hope you are finding this useful?

But in any case, I urge everyone to always spell out an abbreviation when you use it the first time in your post.]]>

How to modify your forum profile and add a signature - by: secretariat Edit on 23 June 2017: The screenshots below are still for the old version of the Forum. They will be updated soon!

You have created a short version of your profile when you registered for the SuSanA website and the discussion forum. But there are many more things to add like personal information (education/profession, contact data or your own "vision"). Check this post regarding "how much personal information you should reveal".

The following will show you how to do this:

This is how you open your profile:

This is where you can add personal information:

Here are some good examples of personal texts:
  • Sanitary engineer with base in Brazil and Peru, doing consultancy in other countries of LA
  • Freelance consultant (former roles: program manager, lecturer, process engineer)
  • I'm a marine biologist by trade and a molecular biologist by training. I specialise in algal virology, in particular the giant viruses that infect E. huxleyi. I'm also interested in technology development and bioprocessing using vortex reactors and PBRs
  • Lecturer Sanitary Engineering teaching in SuSan at UNESCO-IHE
  • I am a shit philosopher, thinking about how we think about sanitation. I think our main paradigms in WASH may be wrong.
What to put in the signature field?
This is up to you, but we suggest that you add the same information to the signature field as you would put in the signature of your e-mail, i.e. your full name, position, company, location, website, Twitter account, ... (but maybe not your phone number and e-mail address; this is up to you how much you want to reveal there).

Apart from personal text and signature you could give other information like your website or location. Those appear as little icons underneath your personal text to the left of your post (these little icons are easily overlooked though).

You can also provide a link to your Twitter account, Facebook page, Linkedin profile, which is only visible to registered users. See here for more information about the link to Linkedin:

This is where everything shows up:

And of course it is also nice if you add a photo of yourself or your work. This is described further in this thread on the forum:

[in support of the secretariat]

P.S. If you prefer to read this information in a separate pdf file, here it is attached for your convenience:]]>

Can I send a post to the forum by e-mail? - by: muench
There could still be some technical hiccups depending on the e-mail client that you use and maybe some other settings, but please do try it out and if there are problems, then please e-mail the secretariat, and further improvements can be made (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Please also see here my other post on some more information about the new digest function which has been much improved and was launched two days ago:

Example how the new forum digest looks like in a Gmail e-mail account (note the text in blue "click here to reply by e-mail" directly under the green title of the post):

Sanitation systems sub-categories on the Forum - a suggestion to change the current setup - by: Decentral I was not able to enter the discussion earlier, but considering that it is an important on-going exercise, decided to share my comments, as related to the current structure of the forum.
1. I have problem with the main definition of sanitation systems as per the main page of the website. Actually, all existing sanitation structures worldwide are included, but the site itself focuses mainly on existing practices and applications in developing countries. This is very clear by the number of posts and related topics. If this is not outlined, the area to be discussed becomes very wide and difficult to manage and categorize.
2. Different types of toilets cannot be categorized as a system. These are sanitation fixtures/appurtenances. On my point of view there is no need to separate in two chapters the urine diverting and the other types of toilets.
3. The “treatment processes…”:
3.1 Treatment processes and treatment technologies are different topics, so I suggest this chapter to be formulated as: “Treatment and disposal technologies for…..
3.2 There are not centralized or decentralized treatment processes or technologies, so I suggest these two to be deleted.
3.3 I suggest two additions to this chapter: aerobic technologies and stabilization ponds
4. The chapter “various topics…”, would sound better as: “various topics related to sanitation systems”
4.1 I see some overlapping between “resilience “and the “climate change” issues in the following chapter.
4.2 I do not understand well - a very serious problem, such as “wastewater characterization (in terms of quantity and quality)” is almost neglected in this forum. No treatment technology can work properly if the loads are not estimated correctly or close to it. Therefore, I suggest an additional chapter: “Wastewater characterization and conveyance (“sewers”)
4.3 Storm water management is also a very important issue related to sanitation systems, but I am not sure in which chapter to go, in this one, or may be with the flooding issues.
4.3 The topic: “drinking water treatment” is totally unrelated to sanitation systems and should be removed (sorry, if somebody disagree)
5. I agree the water reuse issue to be part of resource recovery, but people tend to forget that you have to produce (treat the wastewater) the water, which will be reused, therefore sanitation systems are linked to water reuse systems.]]>

Our Discussion Forum now has a better search function. - Do you like it? - by: muench
When you enter a search term into the search bar, you now land on a page that is a Google site search for Forum and mother website together . Search results are ranked by the Google algorithm, and it is searching through all the Forum posts plus all the pages and sub-pages of the SuSanA mother website ( ) together.

You can also access the search option when clicking on "search" at the top, or when putting a search term into the search bar.
Or when you go here:

What do you think? Is it working well for you? Please do try it out and put your feedback into this thread.

I had problems with editing my personal text in my forum profile - by: muench
Steffen and I couldn't figure out a way to solve that time zone issue, so we simply removed it from the profile information (i.e. to the left of this post). Rather not have it displayed than providing a wrong time.
Let us know if you find anything else that irks you or that is wrong.

Chinese version of the Forum? - let's test the inbuilt Google translator tool for various languages!

All inclusive forum – breaking down the language barrier - by: muench

Hello again Elisabeth,
Is there a French forum available for SuSanA? Just wondering how our francophone engineers can benefit from the sea of information on the platform.

We had previous discussions about this topic on the forum here:
and here:

The current status is this:
  • We invite everyone to post in whichever language they like, provided they add below their message also the translation provided by Google Translate (this translation tool is of course not perfect but it is getting better and better). - If they forget to add it, the secretariat or moderators (like myself) can add the translation to their post.
  • There is a button at the bottom right of the page which allows you to have the entire page translated into a language of your choice (only those language provided by Google Translate are available). Please see screenshot to show you where the button is (red ellipse):

So this is the current status. However, I feel this is perhaps not good enough as not enough non-English speakers seem to feel comfortable with using this Forum.

What else could be do to improve the situation with regards to reducing the language barriers?

Testing the language switch button with Spanish and Swedish - by: canaday
The translator works pretty well taking the content into Spanish and in English.

Did you say "Now I respond to Swedish"?

This translator is a big help.

Best wishes,

Problems with embedded Youtube videos - by: muench
Meanwhile, if you're making a new post, you can still provide the link to a Youtube video in this format, for example:

I took this from the "share" option within youtube. This results in a straight link without a preview picture or thumbnail, i.e. withouth the flash player thing. The preview picture (if I take the link displayed in the URL field) results in such a black box currently, which is not clickable (unless, apparently, if you use Firefox):

Note added on 22 August 2016: It is working fine again! We don't know exactly why; it has something to do with Google and Youtube, and changes in Flash and HTML5.

If you are experiencing any problems with embedded youtube videos, and just see a black box that is not clickable, please bring it to our attention. Either by posting here or by e-mailing the secretariat: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.]]>

SuSanA's new partner profile pages - by: secretariat ). New functionalities allow each SuSanA partner organisation to

• Present your organisation’s work and activities in sustainable sanitation
• Share your project activities, publications and news with the SuSanA community
• Find information about other organisations working on the same topic

All SuSanA partners will have the opportunity to present their organisation in a multidimensional way in the new SuSanA partner pages by
• Sharing project information and results (see for example here: )
• Advertising events in the SuSanA event calendar
• Uploading publications to the SuSanA library
• Advertising job vacancies and posting news

Check out GIZ’s partner profile to see an example of the new presentation format:
Setting up a profile is available for all SuSanA partners by logging into and going to the “edit partner pages” option. The interface is very easy to use and it should not take longer than 15 minutes to set up a complete profile including pictures, media, publications, projects, etc. Furthermore, to get an overview about the work of other organisations, the partner pages offer new maps that show the geographic location of all SuSanA partners, and the location of their projects. All projects entered by SuSanA partners will automatically appear in the SuSanA project database that currently contains over 260 projects

To get started, download the SuSanA partner profile guideline here ( ), or watch the tutorial videos created for every section of the profile in the SuSanA YouTube channel here:

If you prefer live assistance, feel free to join one of 3 webinars that will be offered on 18.06 (10 a.m. CET), 20.06 (5 p.m. CET) and 22.06 (2 p.m. CET). These webinars are also a good opportunity for a session of Q&A. If you are interested in attending one of these webinars, please send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. How can I change the title of a thread that I started? Can the moderators change a thread title, too? - by: muench
Well, I think it would help me as a moderator if individuals adapted their own thread titles, too, if they realise that they are sub-optimal (keeping in mind that users can only change their own thread titles, not those of other people)

For me it's the same as with editing one's own post after having submitted it: you may find a typo or realise you have forgotten something, so you can go back in and edit your own post (using the "edit" button below your post) - and this includes the thread title, too.

This for me is a major advantage compared to e-mail based discussion groups where it's a matter of "once the e-mail is sent you cannot change the content anymore".]]>
