Informations about the aerobic granular sludge process and about wastewater treatment at a small scale

Hello everyone !

We are a group of environmental engineering students at EME, school of engineering in France. We are working on a project in order to familiarize ourselves with the wastewater treatment technology.

As to say, we started a literature study about conventional activated sludge process and about aerobic granular sludge process. We are looking for more information about wastewater treatment at a small scale from 200 to 2000 ie (inhabitant equivalent) and for refugees camps.

Do you have any information about the way they treat wastewater in refugee camps? Who is responsible for the installation and the maintenance of the water treatment plant? Do you have any idea of the cost? Have you got any feedback from current installations in the world? Do you have members who work on the reuse of wastewater (treated or untreated) for irrigation uses of food production plots near homes?
Concerning the activated sludge process, are there any susana members who build or operate this type of process?

Sincerely,

Eric Philipot, the leader of this group project.

Re: Informations about the aerobic granular sludge process and about wastewater treatment at a small scale

That are some very broad questions that make it difficult to answer them.

For small scale waste water treatment search for the term DEWATS. Generally speaking the NGO Borda is probably the one with the best information on it, see en.borda.de/

Typically refugee camps do not have waste water treatment systems, but rather rely on simple on-site systems only. Lately this has been more and more recognized as a problem and organizations are looking into setting up fecal sludge collection and treatment systems.
