Re: Responses to the current Global Emergencies for Sanitation

Hi Mohammad,

Thanks for the clarification. As a sanitation specialist I tend to gravitate to the WEDC definition for emergency sanitation; ‘the means of controlling and managing excreta, solid waste, medical waste, dead bodies and wastewater, and of promoting best hygiene practice in order to create a safer environment and minimise the spread of disease in a disaster affected area’. This definition reflects the challenging nature of emergency sanitation and how it encompasses more than latrines alone.

The SuSanA team has been developing the wikipedia pages on emergency sanitaiton too if you would like more clarity on that it can be found here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_sanitation

When looking for guidance and technical documents I normally go for the WEDC or WHO materials as these are the ones the sector has been using for as long as I can remember. When I put this post up I was looking to see if there are any new guidance documents being used by emergency practitioners or if there were any being developed for specific responses. For example in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan Oxfam developed guidance on lime stabilisation for FSM (forum.susana.org/277-fsm-planning-tools-...t-in-the-philippines) and there is currently some work being done on FSM in Cox Bazaar.

I hope that helps clear things up.

Esther

Re: Responses to the current Global Emergencies for Sanitation

Thanks Elisabeth,

I think based on the responses that there is no real need to refine the resources on SuSanA, but it might be worth seeing if there is any feedback from the WASH cluster meeting/EHF this week that we can look at for ensuring SuSanA is meeting the needs of the emergency sanitation network.

Re: Responses to the current Global Emergencies for Sanitation

Dear Esther,

What kind of resources are you after? And where is the gap in knowledge, i.e. what do the aid agencies need exactly? Perhaps all the information is already out there but there is no "time" to digest new information, train staff and then do things differently to before?

Also is this an initiative of SuSanA's Working Group 8 to collect more or other materials than what they have done already?

For those not aware of this: each working group has a website page like this one:
www.susana.org/en/working-groups/emergen...struction-situations

On this page at the top left you see a link to the "Top-5" reads. And a link at the bottom is taking you to "Recommended reading". In the case of Working Group 8 there are these 22 documents:
www.susana.org/en/knowledge-hub/resource...ns/library/filter/45

So is your question whether there are additional documents that are not yet included or whether the selection needs to be refined?

Please clarify, thanks.

Regards,
Elisabeth

P.S. If it's a call specifically to members of Working Group 8 then you may also like to use the Working Group's mailing list.

Responses to the current Global Emergencies for Sanitation

Hello,

In light of the current emergencies that agencies are responding to does anyone have any useful resources, advice or information to share?

WEDC have circulated the WHO technical notes for drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in emergencies. However it would be good if agencies have any useful resources or advice that is context specific to share them for others operating in the sector.

Thanks
Esther
