One from India:

Environmentally Friendly Bio-toilets by Banka BioLoo in states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, India

The Andhra Pradesh Educational Welfare & Infrastructure Development Corporation (APEWIDC) is a government owned entity that is entrusted the task of constructing schools for the socio-economically disadvantaged children. On knowing about the innovative bio-digester technology that treats human waste at source, APEWIDC approached Banka BioLoo Pvt Ltd – the premier bio-toilet company – to convert APEWIDC’s residential schools’ septic tanks to bio-tanks. To pilot with, in 5 schools, Banka BioLoo upgraded the hugely built septic tanks to lesser space consuming multi-chambered matriced bio-tanks. The bio-digester bacteria in these tanks treat the fecal matter, resulting into pathogen-free effluent water – that the schools effectively use for gardening. The system also releases bio-gas, and that is the next step: collect and utilize this bio-gas for cooking. The overall mandate is to upgrade 350 schools’ sanitation systems to this environmentally friendly and sustainable one.

Re: Zimbabwe Chisungu school sanitation story for WG 7 publication

I have prepared something about our work at Chisungu for Christian's school sanitation book, see attached.
It should be 2 pages. It has 5 pictures we took 1000's !

It is amazing how many benefits came out of it, although the method has not yet been replicated in other schools in Zimbabwe.

Best wishes Peter

Dear Scott,
Thanks a lot for your interesting story. As we have collected already quite a lot of stories we could take it onboard for a second edition. The project is of big scale and a perfect example for productive use of human waste. Great!

Lets stay in touch.

Cheers

Re: Compiling SuSanA school sanitation success stories in a publication

Claudia:
How about my story ?

During 2008-2010, encouraged by Arno and I , the SOHO China Foundation built UDDT for 31 schools with about 20,000 students and teachers in Gansu province of China.

As a volunteer for teaching the students to use the toilets, I have been using the urine to grow cherries and apples with a good profit since 2010.

In 2011, the harvest was around 5,000 kg apples with a income of 120,000 RMB cooperating with one orchard owner.

In 2012, the harvest was 60,000 kg apples, cherries and vegetables with an income of 1.3 million RMB working with 30 orchard owners.

In 2013, I cut the production to 40,000 kg apples and cherries with an income of 1.1 million RMB becuase of the insufficient urine.

The profit to my family is about 0.8 million RMB for the apple and urine business during last 3 years. Neither the schools nor the farmers pay me for transporting the urine.

Marketing and orders processing are done by the Internet 100%. The products are delivered to the thousands of customers in big cities over 1,000 km away. Over 50% orderes were placed on us before the actual harvest.

Within last 12 months, among 1485 comments on the product quality , only 3 bad comments were found.

Over 3,000 people have been registered as my potential customers in my Internet homepage shop72303853.taobao.com/shop/view_shop.h..._number_id=889090749 .

Over 30 news media have covered my story of apple and urine giving me many opportunies to advocate the sustainable sanitation business.

Dear Florian,

I apologize for the slow response to your post, but if you are still interested we would love to have the case study of your work in Moldova! I can forward you a copy of the other stories, so you have a sense of the style of the other stories.

Best,
Amanda

Re: [Wg7] Collecting good case studies of sustainable sanitation in schools and kindergartens from all over the world

Dear Amanda,
I somehow managed to overlook this thread all the time. Are you still able include more case studies? In our project in Moldova, we support a lot of schools with constructing UDDT toilets blocks, with quite some good success. Here some information.

EDIT: As agreed with Amanda, I add a little more information here, the case/story may later be covered more in detail in the 2nd volume. I just try to add some facts, we can do it more in story style later when you start the 2nd volume.

School sanitation in Moldova:

With support of the ApaSan Project (funded by Swiss and Austrian Governments, implemented by Skat), 51 school toilets have been constructed or are currently in construction in rural villages in Moldova, serving about 16.000 pupils and teachers.

The toilets are urine diversion dry toilets that are attached to the main school building. The toilets are maintained by the school caretakers. Collected urin is brought to fields, dried feces are usually buried (the amount is relatively small).

Toilet buildings are built to a "European standard" with tiles, lightening, ventilation and heating. Handwashing facilites are included.

These toilets replace the old toilets, which are typically toilets located outside (cold in winter), badly maintained, and very smelly. The old toilets normally use simple concrete tanks where the fecal matter is collected and supposed to be removed by vacuum trucks and brought to (now mostly disfunctional) wastewater treatment plants.

As flush toilets are no alternative in most villages due to lack of sewers and wastewater treatment plants, the UDDT toilets provide a comfortable and environmental friendly alternative to the old toilets.

The project runs already since several years, which has allowed to constantly improve the design of the toilets and the implementation modalities. Improvements added over the years include:
- Optimizing the design for reducing construction costs
- Attaching the toilet to the main building rather than seperate buildings (allows using the toilet without having to go out in the cold
- Reducing barriers to access (latest generation allows access with wheelchairs)
- Increased responsbility of partners and moving towards up-scaling (latest projects are done with the district school administration rather than with indivdual schools, which allows for higher number of toilets to be implemented in parallel)
- Increased local financing (now approaching 50%)
- Moving from directly training pupils to training of trainers (the teachers)

The toilets are generally very popular and percieved as a much more comfortable and modern alternative to the tradtional toilets. A recent assessment of the toilets that are in operation since several years showed that all toilets are operating and are generally in a good state. However the assessment also showed that about half of the toilets have some issues with not so perfect maintenance, like non-functiong water supply (for hand washing), urine smell (e.g. due to non-replacement of the condom-smell trap), etc. These issues will be addressed in the follow-up support provided by the project.

Examples of old toilets that are replaced by new UDDTs:

Florian

Re: [Wg7] Collecting good case studies of sustainable sanitation in schools and kindergartens from all over the world

Dear Elisabeth (and everyone),

I just wanted to provide an update on the publication you had asked about back in January. I am an environmental engineer from the US, spending the next four months in the Sustainable Sanitation Programme at GIZ. In the last few weeks, I have been working with Christian to move the publication on sustainable sanitation in schools further along towards completion. It is our hope that we should be able to send a draft out to the SuSanA partners whose work is highlighted shortly to let them review the stories. We should then be able to use their feedback to make further edits, and then we should be able to move further along to things like layout, design, etc. (The plan at this point is still to have an actual publication as opposed to a Wiki.)

I’m not sure I can tell you exactly when it will be available, but I just wanted you to know that it hasn’t been forgotten and is still being worked on!

Best,
Amanda

Re: [Wg7] Collecting good case studies of sustainable sanitation in schools and kindergartens from all over the world

Dear Claudia (WECF) and Christian (GIZ),

I would like to know what the status is now regarding your proposed publication called "Collecting good case studies of sustainable sanitation in schools and kindergartens from all over the world". I can see that stories have been collected over the past year (see posts above), but when will it be collated and available as a concise document?

I am sure it will be a useful document once it is done.
Or are you perhaps planning to make it like an online Wiki-type internet page?

Kind regards,
Elisabeth

P.S. There are also these 38 posts on "getting WASH in schools right" from all over the world in this thread:
forum.susana.org/forum/categories/75-wor...ve-wg-7-mailing-list
(note you can only read it once you have logged in; I actually wonder if those posts should not also be moved from the "for logged in persons only" section out into the open so that they become searchable? They were posts from the working group 7 mailing list which were archived in the forum in this manner).

Oh, I just see that Christian had already moved some of them to here:
