MHM success stories from Ethiopia

MHM success History -Ethiopia
Dibora Bekele is a grade 10 student in Boset high school , Olenchity town Oromiya region ethiopia. Proper MHM in school is central for school girls to attend and stay in school" , she says

" Before UWASH program intervention on MHM Boset high school girls highly faced problems on menstrual hygiene management (MHM) because there is no hygiene facility for changing cloths/pads and washing. We usually do not attend school, feeling discomfort, less concentration and limited participation during the period of menstruation, in addition we do not want to stand and go to anywhere until to the end class, In addition we do not want to come to school to attained until menstruation stops. All most all 742 girl students found in Boset high school faced the same problem.
Thanks to Olenchity Urban WASH program, they did a lot starting from establishing gender balance and disability and vulnerability inclusive MHM club, awareness on good MHM through SLTSH.
World vision Urban WASH program in collaboration with school management team: counseling and resting room was prepared and cleaning room was constructed, logistics(sanitary napkins, soap, bed sheet, blanket, sponge frash...) for MHM room has been provided. Training and IEC/BCC materials has been provided to capacitate our knowledge and skill, to promote MHM for school community.
Currently more than 60% of girl students in our school including me started using MHM room to read IEC/BCC materials and use sanitary napkins found in the MHM room. Moreover, involvement of male students in our school is now changed, male's are not fear for girl students.
No more fear to change sanitary napkins, stress and discomfort to attained class, or participate in any organized events at school.
No school girl absentees B/C of MHM problem!

Re: MHM success stories from Ethiopia

Dear Rubika,
Greeting
In our MHM intervention we use:

1. We disseminate MHM messages by fliers, brouchers and bill boards in local languages with in the school community as well as for the large communities .
2. There is 1-5 development army structure in schools and all the school children are members for this 1-5 development army. we work through the school WASH and girl club on this development army
To break the silence around MHM in the community We further did

3. Conduct mass menstrual hygiene campaign in the community.
4. We also work closely with religious institution like with orthodox, Muslims, protestant. First of all we gave training for their leaders and they further they gave awareness on this agenda for their followers
5. advocate the importance on MHM intervention and finally the political leaders accept the agenda and after that they integrate with their regular programs

However I find it worthless sending you the materials prepared in local languages. Therefore try to understand the points I am write above and incorporate for your further intervention.

With kind regards
Bacha Kitesa
