Re: Website for World Toilet Day launched

Hi Anna,
the link that Nitya just posted works for me: wtd.unwater.org/2017/

But for your link I am still getting an error message: www.worldtoiletday.info/ it says "Error establishing a database connection". Strange. Perhaps something to do with Chrome or cookie settings.

Also with Chrome I find the normal text on your website difficult to read as it seems too thin. I had already the same observation for the page about World Water Day.

See screenshot example:

Re: Website for World Toilet Day launched

Dear all,

The website and resources for outreach during World Toilet Day, which is celebrated annually on 19 November, have been released. The theme for World Toilet Day 2017 – wastewater – coordinates with the theme selected for World Water Day 2017, which is celebrated annually on 22 March. It is available at this link.

UN-Water announced the launch of the website during the 27th meeting of UN-Water, which took place from 25-26 August 2017.
The World Toilet Day website indicates that to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal on clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), “we need everyone’s poo to take a 4-step journey:” it must be contained, transported, treated and disposed or reused. These steps require poo to be deposited into a hygienic toilet and stored in a sealed pit or tank and separated from human contact, and necessitate pipes or latrine emptying services for moving poo to the treatment stage and then processing into treated wastewater and waste products that can be safely returned to the environment. Finally, safely treated poo can be used for energy generation or as fertilizer in food production.
SDG target 6.2 calls for, by 2030, achieving “access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations.” The World Toilet Day website highlights that sanitation is central to eradicating extreme poverty (SDG 1).

Factsheets, logos and posters, as well as case studies, can be accessed on the World Toilet Day website. An event calendar will be updated as UN-Water is informed about activities marking the global day.

Regards,

Nitya Jacob

Dear Anna,
There seems to be a problem with your website? I tried the link you gave but it didn't work: www.worldtoiletday.info/
It says: Error establishing a database connection
(I am using Chrome)

I already noticed that yesterday but decided to wait for a day. But it still doesn't work today.
Also when I looked at it from my mobile phone, the texts were very faint and hard to read as they were in light grey.

Kind regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Getting ready for World Toilet Day on 19 Nov 2017 - Is the theme already set in stone (why waste water?)?

Dear all,

I just wanted to let you know that the World Toilet Day 2017 campaign and website just gone live.

Currently organizations have the possibility to upload any event activities they plan, and learn more about this year’s theme - wastewater. Within the coming weeks, we will publish more campaign resources, such as posters, factsheet and social media cards. They will all be available in the 6 UN languages.

And as always – World Toilet Day posters, logos and memes are all available to download on www.worldtoiletday.org

Re: Getting ready for World Toilet Day on 19 Nov 2017 - Is the theme already set in stone (why waste water?)?

Dear Elisabeth,

Thank you so much for opening this discussion.
The theme for World Toilet Day is the same as for the World Water Day this year - wastewater. The campaign title is however not finalised, but the overall idea is to focus on the fact that for billions of people around the world, sanitation systems are either non-existent or ineffective. And that we need everyone’s poo to be captured, transported, treated and disposed of in a safe and sustainable way, in order to achieve SDG 6.

Best regards,
Anna

Getting ready for World Toilet Day on 19 Nov 2017 - Is the theme already set in stone (why waste water?)?

Dear all,

The annual theme for World Toilet Day is usually the same as for World Water Day in the same year.
Is it already set in stone that World Water Day will also be under “why waste water?” this year? If not, I would like to put a case forward that it’s perhaps not quite ideal:
- Firstly, that play on words does not work so well for everyone, particularly non-native English speakers. There is anyhow confusion whether "wastewater" should be spelled in one word or two (my observation is that nowadays it is usually spelled in one word but around 20 years ago it was also spelled in two words).
- Secondly, it seems ironic to tell 2.5 billion people who don’t have anything resembling a flush toilet and probably quite low access to water that they should save water. They don’t have much water to speak of in the first place. We actually often want them to use more water, e.g. for handwashing and other hygiene needs.
- So I am not sure how you would want to make that connection or is it mean to speak more to people in the wealthy countries?

If it's already set in stone then I wonder if there are any small tweaks we could use to make it work for us.

For themes of previous years, check here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Toilet_Day#Annual_themes

- 2016 Toilets and Jobs (same theme as 2016 World Water Day.)
- 2015 Toilets and Nutrition. The hashtag #WeCantWait was used to promote WTD on twitter.
- 2014 Equality and Dignity. Ending open defecation and putting a spotlight on the risk of assault and violence against women and girls where inequalities in access to sanitation exist.
- 2013 Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future
- 2012 I give a shit, do you?
