Call for Proposals for "Country-wide Shit-Flow Diagram: Establishing National Excreta Flows in South Africa" (WRC)

The Water Research Commission (WRC, South Africa) has opened a directed Call for Proposals for "Country-wide Shit-Flow Diagram: Establishing National Excreta Flows in South Africa".

Instead of targeting few big cities, the WRC aims to use the SFD tool to provide a national diagnosis of excreta management and establishing the regional capacity within South Africa to prepare high quality SFDs with no or minimal support from the project team. Details can be viewed on WRC website: www.wrc.org.za .

Deliverables:
1. Application of SFD tool in metros
2. Incorporate and apply Resource Value Mapping to SFD tool
3. Workshop/s with key stakeholders: introduction of SFD tool and training to apply SFD
4. SFDs prepared for smaller municipalities
5. Draft final report comprising of SFDs for South Africa and uploading of SFDs onto the SFD Promotion Initiative website.
6. Corrected final guidelines, following review by the Reference Group

Expected outputs
1. City-wide, provincial and national diagnosis of excreta management in South Africa.
2. Estimate on national level the potential for resource recovery from excreta.
3. Capacity building on national level to prepare high-quality SFDs.

Dear Sudhir,

Your call for proposals looks really interesting. I had a look at the WRC website:

1 June 2017 (Thursday) - Publication of Terms of Reference (ToRs) and Call for open proposals by Special Announcement on the WRC website.

I couldn't find the terms of reference, should they already be online? Perhaps I haven't looked properly? And is this funded by WRC money or partly also by Gates Foundation grant money (just curious)?

Regards,
Elisabeth

P.S. Interesting that you also call it Excreta Flows. Do you find that better than "shit flows"? (I do)

Re: Call for Proposals for "Country-wide Shit-Flow Diagram: Establishing National Excreta Flows in South Africa" (WRC)

Hi. This will be funded by the WRC as part of our national planning. Much of the SFD tool standardisation has been done by others in SFD Promotion Initiative and we acknowledge their efforts. While the BMGF has played a role in the funding of the SFD, I am sure they will happy to see it being taken up by others. The SFD Workshop held in Chennai, India at the FSM4 Conference was a good platform for others to see the use of the tool. The potential to estimate potential resource recovery also fits in with our strategy of beneficiation of waste.

The ToR is attached.
