Senior Lecturer/Reader in WASH Impact Evaluation at Cranfield University

Cranfield University is one of the top five research-intensive universities in the UK and has an unrivalled reputation for transforming cutting edge technology, management and science into practical, life-enhancing solutions. In the recent UK Research Excellence Framework over 80% of the research carried out by the university was assessed to be either world or internationally leading, indicating the quality and impact of the work carried out.

Our provision of education and research on Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) in developing countries delivers pioneering research that has changed water and sanitation thinking and practice, is a leading provider of progressive educational and research support for international development, often through ground breaking collaborations with the private sector. These contributions are founded on strong scientific foundations and are drawn from right across the science and humanities spectrum. Our activities in this area currently comprise an MSc course on Community Water & Sanitation, over £2m of research income including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded ‘Reinvent the Toilet’ project and the Australian Aid funded “Community Water Plus” project.

You will provide leadership and mentoring for a well established WASH team within Cranfield Water Science Institute (CWSI) as well as strategic direction for an already successful teaching and research programme. You will be expected to rapidly embed themselves within CWSI’s existing teaching and research activities, adapt to the Institute’s ethos, lead the Community Water and Sanitation MSc and Water and Sanitation for Low Income Countries Community of Practice and generate significant research & teaching income through leading large grant bids and organising short courses.

You will have a PhD or EngD Degree in a field related to WASH Impact Evaluation (e.g. economics, development studies, technology evaluation, spatial geography, water management), an extensive track record of winning and delivering research projects sponsored by both the public and private sectors, a strong peer-reviewed publication track record and experience of teaching and supervision at post-graduate level.

Your experience should have provided you with a close understanding of the contemporary challenges facing the WASH sector and practical knowledge of the design and implementation of WASH interventions. You should understand the connections between the technocratic aspects of service delivery and the social, economic, political and institutional contexts in which services are delivered.

We are looking for someone with excellent oral and written communication skills who is comfortable and confident dealing with senior colleagues and research sponsors.
