Join PSI at the Upcoming UNC Water & Health Conference

Join PSI at the UNC Water & Health Conference

From October 16th-20th, PSI will join hundreds of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) professionals in Chapel Hill, NC for the 2017 Water and Health Conference: Where Science Meets Policy (waterinstitute.unc.edu/conferences/waterandhealth2017/). Through presentations and symposia, PSI is collaborating with several partners to share learning and raise awareness on topics ranging from rethinking rural sanitation to market strengthening to compound sanitation in West Africa.

Monday, October 16

Side Event: Rethinking Rural Sanitation- Practical Pathways to Outcome Focused Programming
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Room: Sunflower

Convened by USAID, WaterAid, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNC, UNICEF, Plan International, and PSI, this side event will be an open and candid discussion with leading sanitation practitioners, researchers, and policy makers on the evidence gaps, key implementation principles, how we can collaborate better, and new hypotheses in rural sanitation intervention.

Tuesday, October 17

Side Event: Confronting the Elephant in the Room- How Do We Get from Increased Coverage to Safely Managed Sanitation?
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Room: Sunflower

This side event convened by PSI, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and FSG will facilitate a dialogue among actors working in sanitation on the lessons learned from various approaches, with a focus on what it will take and how to shift towards accelerating progress to meet the new ambitious goal of safely managed sanitation.

Thursday, October 19

Side Event: The Business Case for Women in WASH
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Room: Bellflower

iDE, PSI, and Water.org argue that the dominant WASH discourse positions women as disadvantaged and needing assistance, inadvertently perpetuating a view of women as weak, and dismissing their potential contributions. The session aims to begin a conversation to better understand the role of women as change agents in WASH markets and economic development, rather than just beneficiaries of WASH outcomes.

Presentation: A Landlord's Journey to Improved Sanitation- Compound Sanitation in Cote d'Ivoire
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Room: Mountain Laurel

This presentation will explore how the Sanitation Service Delivery (SSD) project, a USAID/West Africa urban sanitation project implemented by PSI in collaboration with PATH and Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), approaches the sanitation challenges of compound housing in Cote d'Ivoire. In Cote d'Ivoire, SSD is using a market-based model to promote installation of new toilets and soak pits in compounds. The presenter will share insights gathered from landlords as SSD scales up its sales and finance strategy to increase access to basic sanitation for more than 220,000 people.
