Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Hi everyone,

I'd love to hear an update on these various projects!
Specifically searching for a solution suitable for urban, densely populated environments.

Many thanks!

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

However, there seems to be some clever hidden way of closing the lid when the hand shower is used. How does this work?

Hehe, you´re right. At the moment the user pushes the lid open against a spring until it rests against a permanent magnet ("fire door magnet") - a flow sensor in the shower hose and an Arduino (ok, its a bit overkill ;) releases the lid.
Currently we are looking to do all that mechanically, without electronics. Possibly with a mechanism similar to the ones used in car locks (eg www.southco.com/en-us/r4-r)
In fact the lid isn´t the biggest challenge but the time delay that needs to be implemented between flushing/closing of lid and the operatioin of the urine/water diversion mechanism. This is quite easy electronically but hard mechanically.

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Gerwin,
Why do you want the two to be separate, other than cross-contamination? I work with individuals who have an enzymatic process. I asked them their thoughts and was told: "A small amount would go far in helping with the degradation and odor. If aeration is introduced you would have metabolization and 2 by-products (water and Fertilizer) and most importantly not having the need to separate urine from feces." I'm not sure if this is helpful for your question, so am not sure if it is helpful, but if so, I could get you more...just let me know.

We're on it!
Thanks for your thoughts. There's still much to learn from UDT's, so we'll continue looking at that.
Will try to keep you updated here on the forum.
All the best!

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Hi Gerwin,

you need to invent your solution. With SuSana, you can find all the existing systems. If it does not exist, create it. But it is a long way and a lot of money; believe me.
I think that you can find a easier solution. Try to find a mix solution, using an existing system and you complete it by another part.
Sometimes, it is better than developing a complicated new system.
Good luck

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Bernard,
Good to learn more about the workings of your fancy blue toilet! We thought of the first solution as well but rejected it because users would stay in the same squatting position when cleansing their ass, and thus foot activation will not work very well.
The new solution I like because the mechanism is more simple. However, there seems to be some clever hidden way of closing the lid when the hand shower is used. How does this work? ;)
I'm very curious about the results of your tests in Kampala.

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Emmanual, thanks!
I like the simplicity of your fluid/solid separation (and good job with the design of the toilet!). However, this solution does not meet my demand because it mixes water with urine. I'd like to keep the water separated from the urine (and feces) to avoid cross contamination. Any thoughts on that?

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Hi Gerwin,

We are facing the same problem ;)

We figured, there are basically two options;

1) separate the feces hole and the user during washing.
as you stated yourself, moving the user is no desirable option.
so you could move the feces hole away.
we did show this approach on the rttc fair in 2012.

lots of mechanics. probably not the best approach for our target market...

2) option two would be to cover the feces hole while washing.
much less mass has to be moved that way.
have a look at that approach:

still work in progress but I hope these ideas help...

best

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Hello,

I am manufacturing UD toilets using a conveyor belt and the conveyor separate urine and feces. Like that, you do not have different holes but only one. Have a look on my website. The english version is not update but you can find good information on it and you can also look at the drawing in the french version.
Tell me if you need more information

Re: Water diverting toilet solutions

Hello,

I can provide you a solution with 1 hole and you can collect on one side feces and on the other side urine and wash water. Is it something interesting for you ?

Water diverting toilet solutions

Dear all,

Since dry toilets are not suitable for 'washers', I was wondering if you know of any solutions that divert anal cleansing and flushing water from the waste. In other words, how can the waste (feces/urine) and water streams be collected separately? Squatting pans in specific. I'm aware of the pans with 3 holes, so I'm looking for other solutions (preferably the user does not have to move to another hole or bidet).

Much appreciated!
Gerwin
