Is there an easy way for new users to browse the most popular messages? - And top contributors

This question came in from Chris Canaday recently:

When people visit the website for the first time, is there an easy way for them to browse the most popular messages? This should be feasible combining the number of likes and the number of views.

This is only partially possible at the present time by going to the statistics page here:
forum.susana.org/forum/statistics?task=3

On this page (which is accessible via the black menu bar at the top under Forum Tools), you can sort the threads by the highest number of views and replies.

However, they are not ranked by number of "likes" received in that thread.
Only the users themselves are ranked by the number of "likes" they received ( forum.susana.org/forum/categories/userlist )

I will discuss this idea with our IT developer because I like your idea to include the number of likes recieved for posts within a thread as a measure of the popularity for that particular thread.

Also, we are thinking of a re-designed "front door" page - geared towards new users - and there such a table of most popular message could indeed be nice to have; rather than having it hidden under Forum Tools, Statistics.

Will let you know what comes out of our deliberations. Keep your ideas coming. B)

Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Is there an easy way for new users to browse the most popular messages? And top contributors.

Dear Chris,

I was just looking through some older suggestions for forum improvements and found your suggestion from August last year.

What we have now been able to implement in the new forum front door ( www.forum.susana.org ) is a listing of "most active" topics for three different time periods that the user can select: week, month or "all time". The "most active" is only based on the number of replies, not on the number of likes for that thread because it was too difficult to program to collect this sort of data and to connect it to a thread (sometimes posts also get moved out of a thread into another thread, adding to the complication).

The likes do come into play for our new listing of "top contributors" which is a summation of posts made and likes received for each user. Again if you you are interested in this parameter, you can select the weekly, monthly or "all time" time scale.

This is how it looks on the front door (the monthly time scale is selected here as an example, that's why it is in green) (see also www.forum.susana.org ):

For the "all time" time period we also have the top-50 conributors listed here:
forum.susana.org/forum/statistics?task=1

It looks like this:
I find this kind of stuff quite interesting, but then I love statistics and tables (could be the engineer in me). :-)

Regards,
Elisabeth

I find it a bit odd that the "muench" account is excluded form these listings, and if that is because oft special moderator status, at least the "secretariat" account should be too. But Elisabeth as a regular user, beside being a moderator should not be excluded in my opinion.

Re: Is there an easy way for new users to browse the most popular messages? And top contributors.

Hi Kris,

I am excluded from these listings because I make far too many posts, that's all. (this was my 1000th post, by the way)

The thing is that I make posts in two capacities: as a moderator (for which I am getting paid*) and as a private person, so I think it would be too misleading to include me in the list of top contributors together with everyone else. If anyone wants to see how many posts I've made and how many likes received, see on the left of my posts click on my photo to access my user profile.

Yes, one could argue to remove the secretariat account also from these listings. I thought it wouldn't hurt to have it in the listing because it's not that dominating (e.g. only in 5th place currently for the monthly value of top contributors) but if people feel strongly about it, then it can be removed.

Regards,
Elisabeth

Re: Is there an easy way for new users to browse the most popular messages? And top contributors.

Hi Kris

I agree that the secretariat should be removed from the stats. I too should not appear in the stats list, for the same reasons as Elisabeth mentioned.* I will take action to amend this. As the stats should be all about the forum users who make this forum vibrant and come alive. Let us try to attract even more colleagues to share their experiences and lessons in sanitation on the forum, so that we can continue to learn together.

Hope all is well in your end in Uganda.

Kind regards
Trevor

* Note by moderator (EvM) Edit on 19 March 2015: A decision was made later to have only Elisabeth and the secretariat not showing up in the stats, as they would distort the figures. Everyone else is included.
